I was thinking about Obama this evening and about his professed faith and religious inclinations. Then, I thought about Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Carter, etc. Every modern president has claimed to be a Christian. What if we had someone who ran for president who was decidedly NOT a Christian? Maybe they were even hostile to Biblical Christianity. What would you think? Would you vote for them? Would they make a good president?
What if he said that he thought the Bible was a mere collection of myths and called the idea of the Trinity akin to magical fantasy? What if he thought that Jesus was a mere mortal and that each person's eternal fate would be decided by whether or not they would benefit humanity? Could a man who denied Biblical Christianity be the President at this time? Would such views be considered too radical or out of the mainstream?

This issue will rise as soon as 2012 with Mitt Romney. What if the conservative party candidate is a Mormon? And we thought Sarah Palin divided the Christians...

He (or she) would have no chance in the foreseeable future.

I put this up the other day and then didn't get back to responding myself. I agree with Doug. This person would have no chance for the forseeable future because of the fear level associated with such positions.
But, it is interesting that the person that I was actually describing was Thomas Jefferson. He held all of these beliefs and was quite public about them. It didn't stop him from being elected president.
Interesting how America has changed since our founding, isn't it? On the one hand, we've become less religious, but on the other, we appeal to a form of civil religion more than we did in the past.

Interesting that most Americans called him a Christian. (What does that say about what we think it means to be a Christian). He was a Universalist wasn't he? I too agree that it would be politcial suicide to not call yourself a Christian in some form or fashion. Mitt might get it because of his Pro Life stance...that would win him over with the fundamental right.

And to think that most people I know think he was a Christian. I thought he was a Universalist??? Goes to show how most Christians define Christianity...I think Romney would get the vote because of his ProLife stance. That would win him a lot of votes right there. Again...Mormons are a more acceptable religion in the US. Even though, as I know, they ARE a cult! Just ask me about my experience one day!
